Quality Management Systems in Independent Audit: An Implementation Guide

The components audit firms must establish during the transition to a quality management system, the risk assessment steps involved and the documentation obligations.

A quality management system requires audit firms to set quality objectives, assess the risks relating to those objectives and design corresponding responses.

System Components

  • The firm’s risk assessment process
  • Governance and leadership responsibilities
  • Relevant ethical requirements and independence
  • Acceptance and continuance of client relationships
  • Engagement performance and resources
  • Monitoring and remediation

Documentation Obligation

The responses designed for each component must be documented together with evidence of their operation. Documentation should consist not only of policy texts but of traceable outputs of the process.

The annual evaluation is expected to conclude on the effectiveness of the system, with any deficiencies addressed through root cause analysis.
